The aking of Angel Wing

I have been asked to pesent a paper on the composition of my piece, Angel Wing, detailing the compositional processes I used in order to create the piece. This paper topic will be presentedat the 13th Biennial Symposium on Arts and Technology at Connecticut College. I have just completed this paper, and I have decided to make it available here. This paper describes the creative process of this piece in both the audio and video realms. Some of the approaches used in this piece were also used in some of my other pieces, such as the use of Processing for semi-random graphic distribution utilized in Beautiful Synchronicites, Establishment, and Spectral Voices in the Light.

Spectral Voices in the Light

Broadcast waves are frequencies within the electro-magnetic spectrum. They are bands of light. Within this light, it has been known that spirits and disembodied beings can communicate. While the messages are faint and enigmatic, the search for them yields intriguing moments of artistically driven feeling and emotion.

The audio material is composed of various searches through the short wave bands of radio waves. These recordings were time and pitch altered using Csound. The resulting audio was further crafted using Spear. All of the orchestration of this material and its spatial panning were done in Sonar. The video was created using processing to generate semi-random distributions of patterns to resemble white noise. Processing was also used to distribute the spirit faces around within the white noise. The final production stage was filtering and video production work performed in Sony Vegas.

Music by Momilani Ramstrum
Video by Lawrence W. Moore

It has been my great pleasure to make the video for the piece, Water, by Momilani Ramstrum. Momilani has a wonderful voice and a very creative spirit. Find out more about Momilani and her music from her web site. I met Momilani at the Transy Studio 30 Festival in September, where Angel Wing was presented in one of the concerts. She liked he video an asked me if I would make a video for one of her works. After hearing her music, I was excited to do so. There will be more video collaboration on he way.

September 2011

The fall semester has started off with a bang this year. I have just completed my new video piece, Fountain Talk, and I am traveling to Lexington, KY to participate in the Transy Studio 300 Digital Arts and Music Festival at Transylvania University, where Angel Wing will be performed. Additionally, I am beginning work ont he video for an upcoming piece, for fixed audio and video called Spectral Voices in the Light, which explores radio noise and chatter transformed by time warping and linear pitch shifting.

This semester, I am teaching Sound Recording and Jazz & Popular Music Appreciation at Miami-Dade College and Multimedia for Musicians and Electronic Music Ensemble at the University of Miami. Classes are going well and it is shaping up to be a great semester for me and my students.

Angel Wing to be Presented in Festivals

I have been honored recently to have my piece, Angel Wing presented at the Transy Studio 300 Festival at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky and the Electro-Acoustic Barn Dance at University of Mary Washington in Virginia. These two acceptances are indeed a great honor, and I am looking forward to these attending these events.

Fountain Talk

The fountain is a metaphor for the communication that comes through life itself. Spewing forth, in a relentless stream comes the mysterious and dark realities that we so desire not to face. The video was created using Ultra Fractal to generate the fractal imagery and Sony Vegas to filter and process the fractal videos. The audio was generated through granular synthesis utilizing Csound. The generated audio tracks were mixed and processed in Sonar.

May & June 2011

I have been using the beginning of the summer as a time to work on learning new software of interest and composing. I have been teaching myself how to generate animated fractal art using Ultra Fractal. This is a very dynamic and powerful shareware software with a thriving online community of contributors who are adding new content for use with the software on a weekly basis. I am employing Ultra Fractal in a new video work that I have been creating this summer.

I have also been spending some time with SynthEdit. This is also shareware software that has an active online community of content creators. SynthEdit allows one to create stand-alone VST plugins. One can create virtual instruments with GUI interfaces that are completely compatible with the VST protocol. I have been generating a new synthesizer plugin for my own work. When it is completed, I will list it into he software page.

This semester's EME concert is going to be a powerful sound experience. Emerging composers, David Sargent, Kian Fan, Liza Seigido, and Alessandra Silvatti are presenting pieces that promise to enchant the ears. Our concert will also feature our rendition of John Cage's Aria. Admission is free to the public as always. The pieces include video works, live interactive electronics, audience participation, and as always, powerful sounds.

Parking is conveniently located near the concert hall off of San Amaro and Miller Drive. Here's a campus map.

The Electronic Music Ensemble Spring Concert also included the debut of my latest video piece, Angel Wing.

Angel Wing

The disembodied beings that surround us have strange and wonderful powers that baffle our imaginations. They can be playful and loving, or destructive and cruel. Either way, they live here among us.

I created the video in Processing, where I made a semi-fractal image from small graphic elements. This video was then taken into Vegas, where I applied effects and 3d motion. For the music, I recorded tapping and striking sounds on metal speaker stands and performed Fast Fourier Transfers effects ont hem in Spear. I then mixed and applied delay and equalization in Sonar

March, 2011

On March 11th, I teamed up with my colleagues, Ferdinando De Sena, Nestor Prieto, and Brian Del Toro to perform a group set of PDMD music at the SubTropics Festival of Miami. This is a biannual festival and is one of the most significant electro-acoustic concert series in South Florida. Many thanks to Gustavo Matamoros for his continued work in running this series.

On March 25th, 7:30pm at Miami-Dade College, Kendall Campus, building K-413, I will be performing a mixed set of pieces with my colleague, Liza Seigido. We will be performing our video works, including live vocals, live processing, and EWI. This program is entitled, Sounds of Spirit and Synchronicity. This promises to be a powerful night of music.

This month ended with the premiere of When Swords MeetI, my latest fixed audio work. The piece was premiered at the Society of Compossers Incorporated spring concert at the University of Miami.

Establishment
for EWI and fixed video (stereo/5.1)

While most of my time has been devoted to teaching courses this semester (Sound Recording 1, Music Theory, and Ear Training at Miami-Dade College and Electronic Music Ensemble and Digital Synthesis at the University of Miami) I have finalized the production of Establishment, a piece for EWI and fixed audio/visual playback. This piece explores an allegory that presents itself in the first 8 hexagrams of the I Ching. The overall story is one of birth, nurturing, conflict, and ultimate establishment of the new creation.

I have also begun composition of a new piece entitled Angel Wing. This piece involves recorded metal tapping and ringing sounds that I am performing fast fourier transforms on in order to enhance specific partials. I am using Spear to perform this function. The piece will also incorporate video that I am working on in Processing.

I will be performing a combined program of audio and video works with my colleague, Liza Seigido, at the 12 Nights concert series event for February. This promises to be a powerful evening of electronic visual art and music. I will be having Beautiful Synchronicites performed with Liza's outstanding vocal contributions. Additionally, she will be performing her most recent work, St. Vitus' Kyrie.

January, 2011

My work this January is predominantly centered around the SEAMUS 2011 National Conference. In addition to having my piece, SnapDrive, selected for presentation at the conference, I am also serving as the Genelec Listening Room Coordinator for the conference.

SEAMUS

I have put together a web page-driven playback engine that allows a point and click selection of pieces. This playback engine allows the listener to select pieces easily and hear them in their inherent stereo - 7.1 channel formats without any routing changes. Video works are also being presented in the the one listening area, and will also be automatically presented in the same point and click fashion.

I have been enjoying the interaction with other composers as I am contacting them one by one and setting up their media for the playback engine. I am honored to be given this opportunity to design my own listening areas with such powerful music to be presented.
